    Coherent optical binary polarisation shift keying heterodyne system in the free-space optical turbulence channel

    In this paper, analytical and simulation results for the bit error rate (BER) performance and fading penalty of a coherent optical binary polarization shift keying (2PolSK) heterodyne system adopted for a free space optical (FSO) communication link modeled as the log-normal and the negative exponential atmospheric turbulence channels are presented. The conditional and unconditional BER expressions are derived, demonstrating the comprehensive similarity between the 2PolSK and the binary frequency shift keying (2FSK) schemes with regards to the system sensitivity. The power penalty due to the non-ideal polarization beam splitter (PBS) is also analyzed. The receiver sensitivity employing 2PolSK is compared with other modulation schemes in the presence of turbulence and the phase noise. The results show that 2PolSK offers improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance compared to the binary amplitude shift keying (2ASK)

    Experimental investigation of the performance of different modulation techniques under controlled FSO turbulence channel

    This paper experimentally investigates and compares the performance of the free space optics system employing three different modulation schemes, on-off keying (OOK) with nonreturn- to-zero (NRZ) and return-to-zero (RZ) and the binary phase shift keying (BPSK) operating under the turbulent atmosphere. The received average signal is measured and used to characterize the strength of the turbulence. The experiment is performed with a temperature gradient of 4 degrees at a wind velocity of 4 m/s. The temperature gradient within the controlled channel results in turbulence of a log irradiance variance of 0.002, which is classified as a very weak turbulence. The received signal eye diagram and power histograms are presented and analyzed for performance evaluation of the selected modulation schemes in the weak turbulence model

    Convolutional coded dual header pulse interval modulation for line of sight photonic wireless links.

    The analysis and simulation for convolutional coded dual header pulse interval modulation (CC-DH-PIM) scheme using a rate ½ convolutional code with the constraint length of 3 is presented. Decoding is implemented using the Viterbi algorithm with a hard decision. Mathematical analysis for the slot error rate (SER) upper bounds is presented and results are compared with the simulated data for a number of different modulation techniques. The authors show that the coded DH-PIM outperforms the pulse position modulation (PPM) scheme and offers >4 dB code gain at the SER of 10?4 compared to the standard DH-PIM. Results presented show that the CC-DH-PIM with a higher constraint length of 7 offers a code gain of 2 dB at SER of 10?5 compared to the CC-DH-PIM with a constraint length of 3. However, in CC-DH-PIM the improvement in the error performance is achieved at the cost of reduced transmission throughput compared to the standard DH-PIM

    This paper reports experimental results for the performance of an free space optical (FSO) communication link employing different modulation schemes under the influence of the atmospheric scintillation. A dedicated experimental atmospheric simulation chamber has been developed where weak and medium turbulence can be generated and its effect on the FSO link is investigated. The experimental data obtained is compared to the theoretical prediction. The paper also shows that the effect on the data transmission performance depends on the position of turbulence source positioned within the chamber

    What long serving village maintenance workers have in common: findings from Nepal's Karnali zone

    This paper presents the findings of a small qualitative investigation conducted in 2013 interviewing Village Maintenance Workers (VMWs) in three Karnali districts of Mid West Region of Nepal. The predominant water supply technology is Gravity Fed Water Systems (GFWS) often bringing water from spring sources many kilometres from the village and therefore requiring formal management for sustained operation and maintenance. The SNV Nepal Functionality of Rural Water Supply (FRWS) programme has identified that of the GFWS in these districts, only around 23% are functioning fully with between 10 and 70% having a designated VMW, depending on the district, despite the presumption that the presence of a trained and motivated VMW is a pre-requisite to ensuring functionality. The investigation aimed to identify common factors amongst long and short-serving VMWs in order to develop strategies to encourage their continued service on rural water supplies (RWS)

    Antiviral Activity of Some Plants Used in Nepalese Traditional Medicine

    Methanolic extracts of 41 plant species belonging to 27 families used in the traditional medicine in Nepal have been investigated for in vitro antiviral activity against Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and influenza virus A by dye uptake assay in the systems HSV-1/Vero cells and influenza virus A/MDCK cells. The extracts of Astilbe rivularis, Bergenia ciliata, Cassiope fastigiata and Thymus linearis showed potent anti-herpes viral activity. The extracts of Allium oreoprasum, Androsace strigilosa, Asparagus filicinus, Astilbe rivularis, Bergenia ciliata and Verbascum thapsus exhibited strong anti-influenza viral activity. Only the extracts of A. rivularis and B. ciliata demonstrated remarkable activity against both viruses

    OFDM-PWM scheme for visible light communications

    In this paper, we propose an improved hybrid optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (O-OFDM) and pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme for visible light communications. In this scheme, a bipolar O-OFDM signal is converted into a PWM format where the leading and trailing edges convey the frame synchronization and modulated information, respectively. The proposed scheme is insensitive to the non-linearity of the light emitting diode (LED) as LEDs are switched ‘on’ and ‘off’ between two points. Therefore, the tight requirement on the high peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR) in O-OFDM is no longer a major issue. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme offers an improved bit error rate performance compared to the traditional asymmetrically clipped O-OFDM (ACO-OFDM)
